Software Details

It runs on Android Gingerbread. HTML and Adobe Flash support is included. Google search, maps, Gmail, organizer, document viewer, voice memo/ dial / commands and predictive text input are also included.

Design Elements

It’s not only the overall design that pleases with the Desire S, it’s also the little touches as well. The edges surrounding the earpiece and front facing camera have a touch of class while the silver strips that are the power and volume buttons feel solidly planted yet have a wonderfully light action. On the left edge you’ll also find a microUSB socket for hooking the phone up to a computer or charging via an adapter, while on the top edge is the now obligatory headphone jack. Just below the earpiece cut out, and set into the glass surface, is a small LED that glows red when charging and flashes green when you’ve got a new message of some sort. Below the screen, and incorporated into the same sheet of glass as the display are the four standard Android buttons.

Multimedia Enhancements

Sound quality is really great. Music was rich and fair over a good set of headphones, with some nice kick to the bass. It became quite distorted at overly high volumes, but you’d rarely need to turn it up that loud. Audio playback formats supported are aac, amr, ogg, m4a, mid, mp3, wav and wma. Audio recording is done in amr format. Video generally looks superb on the Super LCD screen. Colors are appealing and natural, motion is smooth and there’s plenty of detail. The only fly in the ointment is that black levels aren’t very good, and any dark scenes can become hard to follow quite quickly. Video playback formats available are 3gp, 3g2, mp4, wmv, avi and xvid. Video recording could be done in 3gp format.

Final Words

Operation of HTC Desire S is very fast. Slick UI, excellent cloud integration and stunning design are added advantages.

Problem with the Wi-Fi antenna exists. Notification bar is often slow and HD video recording has some issues to look into. HTC Desire S is not cheap for its specifications and has some Android UI issues.

It has the curious kink on the back cover, something that has all but gone from the newer Galaxy S II. Volume controls are on the left of the phone, with the lock key on the right. It’s harder to push on the side, which makes unlocking the phone a bit harder and slower.
